The SEO industry is an oft-maligned industry due to the fact that many people have been left with a bitter taste of dissappointment. Many people have invested a lot of money and some time in SEO services, but have got very little in return. Some of this might have to do with managing expectations. For example, changes you make on your website are not reflected instantaneously on search engines. However, most of these complaints and issues genuine with the SEO industry are genuine. This is due to a large number of SEO firms who claim to do things they cannot and employ bad practices which don't produce any results for clients.

If you a company looking for SEO services, make sure your SEO consultant or company checks out on the following points and are not ripping you off.

Rip-Off #1 - Not providing Position Reports
The whole purpose of providing Search Engine Optimisation services to anyone is to help increase their website's search engine rankings on the chosen search engines. One of the most basic things SEO companies should be doing is providing reports to the client on their website's search engine rankings. At the very least, the report should contain the targetted keywords or phrases, the search engines being targetted and the ranking of the website.

A very basic report would look like this

Search Terms

Search Engine

Search Results

Pest control

google.com

Outside top 30

Pest control Ireland

google.ie

8

Pest Control in Limerick

Yahoo (Ireland)

3

Pest Control in Clare

MSN

5

Pest Control in Tipperary

Yahoo (Ireland)

18th

Pest control in Galway

Google.ie

Outside top 30

Ofcourse, this means that the client will know whether your effort is working or not. The client will also be able to see any progress being made over a period of a few months. A genuine SEO company would want to provide these reports to clients, to be able to demonstrate the progress they are making and justify what they are charging!

This is an absolute bare minimum anyone who is seeking SEO services should ask for and be provided with.
