There's an incredibly liberating technique of writing, called free writing or stream-of-consciousness writing.
Our conscious brain can only hold so much information, and often the patterns in which our sub-conscious stores information, are not clear to us.
You pick a topic, or a number of topics, choose a set period of time and just write what comes to mind .
Disregard spelling, grammar, a consistent theme, or staying on the topic and allow your mind to wander, writing ideas down as they come to mind, in sentences, forming paragraphs.
Once you have completed the exercise(s), review it for patterns of thought that you consider relevant. Often this opens up what you might feel are blocked ideas and thoughts, as your conscious and sub-conscious interact.

GOAL SETTING
Goal setting can be a very powerful tool. Many studies report that those who set goals achieve them, +-10% which can be pretty amazing as you can set any goal out there and expect to achieve it, +-10%, if you are prepared to do whatever it takes to get there.
So what's the catch?
(Just as an example) Everyone probably wants to win the lotto. If you don't buy a lotto ticket, you can't win the lotto. In other words, by just asking the universe to win the lotto, it's not going to happen. You have to add action, and go and buy that ticket.
Sometimes though, the price is just too high.
PLAN OF ACTION
But by putting a plan of action in place you can improve your chances:
Let's say that you dream of buying a house for your family, and that is your goal. In your mind, you picture a five-bedroom double-storey house with a swimming pool. For that to happen, you want to win the lotto.
If you take on a part-time job rather than watch TV every evening, you can afford to buy a lotto ticket, which might be the winning one. Ironically what can happen is that you get promoted, or buy that business, and have someone else work part-time for you, so that you end up being able to buy the house.
The lesson here? Your goal was the house, not the lotto ticket. That was just a vehicle. But by aiming for the goal, that's what you got.
So, identify what your real goal is and work back from that to where you are now, to see what manageable steps you need to take to get to that goal.
VISUALISATION
And when it gets tough, because it does when it's worth it, find pictures of that ideal house and put them up against your wall, or go house-hunting, to make the experience more real. And remember to put a picture of yourself and your family in or on the picture of that house.
